Knowing the volume of the prostate is one of the most useful elements for the urologist to evaluate the possible causes of urinary dysfunction, and it is essential to choose the appropriate surgical technique for the individual patient in anticipation of disostructive surgery. Often diagnostic studies such as Multiparametric Magnetic Resonance Imaging or Transrectal Ultrasound report only the axial measurements (LL, AP and CC diameters) of the gland and not its volume, so this useful tool helps us to quickly calculate the prostate volume by entering the values described in the imaging.
aAverage values of prostate volume in relation to age are reported in a 2013 study (Relationship between age and prostate size, Zhang et al.) and are shown in the table below.
