PRECE, which stands for Predicting Extracapsular Extension, is a useful tool for the surgeon during robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy. It was developed by Professor Bernardo Rocco and Professor Vipul Patel in collaboration with the Global Robotics Institute (Florida, USA) and the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (Modena, IT).
Through histologic analysis of more than 11,000 prostate lobes removed for prostate cancer, an algorithm has been developed to stratify the risk of extracapsular extension of prostate disease. This allows the surgeon performing radical prostatectomy with nerve-sparing intent to choose with the greatest accuracy how to perform this technique, thereby minimizing the risk of disease persistence at the surgical margins.
